Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA)

Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA)

The Need

TRCA is run by a board of city councillors from the City of Toronto as well as the regions of Durham and York. TRCA owns more than 40,000 acres of land in the Toronto region, employs more than 400 full-time employees and coordinates more than 3,000 volunteers each year. The organization has decades of practical experience protecting our environment, educating young people and engaging communities. TRCA works with governments, businesses, and individuals to build a greener, cleaner healthier place to live. Brown & Cohen’s first project was to help TRCA leverage the lessons learned from Hurricane Hazel and raise public awareness about the great strides it has made in minimizing flood risks in communities.

The Brown & Cohen Solution

  • Developed comprehensive media campaigns centering on the importance of flood protection and water management to protect local communities, highlighting TRCA’s 50-year history that began after the Hurricane Hazel disaster
  • Helped profile the impact of Hurricane Hazel through climate expert commentary and witness testimony
  • Built a media strategy around the 50th Anniversary commemoration of Hurricane Hazel targeted at urban affairs, environment and health, business and community editors and reporters from across Ontario
  • Media package included media releases, photo opportunity advisories and backgrounders outlining the lessons learned from Hurricane Hazel and the steps taken by the conservation authority over its 50 year history

The Results

The Hurricane Hazel Campaign resulted in numerous hits in national/local print and broadcast media, including the Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Star, CBC Television and Radio, CFRB, Global TV, CTV, City TV and Toronto community newspapers.

Brown & Cohen worked with TRCA for five years ensuring that it became the leading source for media and the public on environmental issues and seasonal flood warning. Key messages were also delivered through a range of community events that engage the public and educate them on conservation issues. Over 400 pieces of media coverage were generated for these events including The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, National Post, Toronto Sun, Mississauga News, Building Magazine, Vaughan Weekly, Metro News, CBC radio, CFRB, 680 News, Snap!, North York Mirror, CTV, CBC, Global TV, Breakfast TV, CP24, Toronto Life, Hamilton Spectator and Ottawa Citizen.
